Paris, France — asked the French authorities Elon Musk to appear to answer questions as part of an investigation into X’s social media platform, Paris prosecutors said on Monday that authorities raided X’s office in the French capital.
“The call for voluntary interviews on April 20, 2026 in Paris has been sent to Mr. Elon Musk and Ms. Linda Yaccarino, as the de facto and de jure managers of the X platform at the time of the events,” the Paris Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement.
French cybercrime authorities were conducting a raid on X’s Paris offices, the Prosecutor’s Office reported.
The subpoenas of Musk and Yaccarino and the search of X’s office were related to an investigation launched in January 2025 into complaints that X’s algorithm was recommending content to users and collecting data, prosecutors said. Officials have previously explained that the way X works could involve political interference.
The investigation is to ensure X complies with French law, which prosecutors added was expanded last year after reports X allowed users to share non-consensual, AI-generated sexually explicit images and Holocaust denial content.

X and Musk have dismissed the French investigation and similar investigations by European Union and British authorities as baseless and politically motivated attacks on free speech.
Yaccarino stepped down as CEO of X last July after two years at the helm of the company.
The prosecution’s cybercrime unit is leading the investigation, along with the French police and the joint police agency Europol.

A CBS News request for comment on the investigation’s findings was met with an apparent automated response from Musk’s xAI company, saying only: “Lies from the media.”
Scrutiny of the Grok function has increased rapidly in recent months, the British government has warned X could face a UK ban If it doesn’t block the “bikini-fy” tool, EU regulators will announce their own investigation into Grok’s AI editing feature at the end of January.
CBS News discovered that Grok allowed users to digitally undress people in photos after X he said earlier in January that it had, “implemented technological measures to prevent (@)Grok X accounts globally from editing images of real people to reveal clothing such as bikinis. This restriction applies to all users, including paid subscribers.”
