Former US Open champion Danil Medvedev has been hit by the first round defeat in Wimbledon by France’s Benjamin Bonzi.

Medvedev had reached the Wimbledon semifinals for the past two years, but Russian suddenly ended the world’s 64th -ranked number of worlds on Monday to make another strong run at the All England Club.

Bonazi defeated ninth seed Medvedev 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 in three hours and seven minutes in seven minutes.

Bonzi said, “This is my first top -10 win in the slap. Of course, it is always special in this competition,” said Bonzi.

“I like this place, so it’s very special, and Danil is a great player. He has reached the two semifinals here.

“I know this is a difficult match, but sometimes it is good to play this kind of player in the rounds. Anything can happen, so I’m very happy with victory.”
