Woody Harrelson almost pushed to the limit while surfing longtime friend Matthew McConaughey‘s acting process on the set of The real detective.
“It’s the method,” Harrelson, 64, said on the Tuesday, Jan. 6, episode of his and Ted Danson“Where Everyone Knows Your Name” podcast. “It’s Russ Cohle. When we were shooting (The real detective), was Russ Cohle. There were (were) so many times I wanted to punch this mom in the face. I’m very angry with him because it’s in his character.”
Harrelson and McConaughey, 56, have starred in many projects throughout their respective careers, including 2014 The real detective. In the first season of the HBO anthology, the two actors played Louisiana detectives investigating a serial killer.
“We’re sitting there. We’re about to start shooting and we were rehearsing. I’m kind of Russ Cohle being stoic” McConaughey recalled. “Woody’s like, ‘Hey man, I gotta talk to you about something.’ He says, “The way you and I work, McConaughey, I hit you the ball (and) you hit it back, I hit it back. We volley (and) we play. … Man, that’s us. It’s dramatic, but it’s also comedy.”
While Harrelson animatedly tried to talk to McConaugheyhe received no response, much to his dismay.
“I remember telling you, before we started filming, like, ‘Dude, you know people are going to expect to laugh with us, we’ve got to throw some jokes in here,'” Harrelson replied. “It’s just, like, ‘Mhm.’ I’m waiting for him to say, ‘Yeah, you’re absolutely right.’ No, he just said, ‘Mhm, yeah.'”
McConaughey, however, thought that “there could be humor in the situation” instead of making jokes.
“I’m like, ‘No, but we need some jokes, man,'” Harrelson said. “We’ve got to get it Nic (Pizzolattothe The real detective screenwriter) to write us some jokes’”.
Never mind their conflicted acting methods, McConaughey still says The real detective it’s the “favorite” TV project he’s ever done.
“My favorite thing to watch,” McConaughey said. “I’m just saying (because of) the enjoyment I had watching. I didn’t watch (the episodes beforehand). Sunday night was the first time I watched it with Camila (Alves McConaughey and) bottle of wine”.
He continued, “I couldn’t remember where the breaks were in the episode, so I was like everybody else, like, ‘Oh, what happens next?’ … I watched it once a week like everyone else and I loved it.”
McConaughey and Harrelson are getting ready to share the screen once again.
“Now I’m working, with you, on an Apple program called brothers I think it’s fair to call it a comedy, a family … based on our friendship,” McConaughey teased. “When Woody and I get going, he’s talking about hitting these balls back and forth. It’s, like, “Where do I begin and where do I end, and where does it begin and where does it end?” That’s muddy waters man, you’re not sure and you’re on a similar frequency. We’re doing our thing and it can go on and on and on.”
The title of the series is named after the respective children of the actors who believed that they are actually brothers.
“His kids call me Uncle Matthew, my kids call him Uncle Woody,” McConaughey said. “It’s always been a joke.”
