Why The Masked Singer’s croissants were mocked in prison (excl.)


The masked singer revealed the Croissants’ identity after ending in a cliffhanger last week, and one judge’s guess was right on the money.

“I was like, ‘Oh my God, let’s do this one,'” Todd recalled Wednesday. “And Julie said, ‘I’m not doing this.’ The masked singerthey said, “Are you serious? You’re going to do it? Because we wanted him to do this. And I said, ‘Yeah, that’s what we want to do.'”

The couple was convicted on 12 counts of tax evasion, wire and bank fraud and conspiracy in June 2022. Todd was originally sentenced to 12 years in prison, while Julie received a seven-year sentence. The duo, who have repeatedly maintained that they are innocent of any wrongdoing, had been behind bars since January 2023.

“I don’t want to make light of a very tragic situation, but listen, we survived, and there are so many people who didn’t,” he explained. “I want the world to know, and I want the men that I left behind who are sitting there watching this, they don’t know yet. So, I mean, they’re going to find out tonight that Julie and I were, because they’re sitting in prison watching this show. It’s a huge show in prison.”

He added: “I want them to know that there is life after that season of their lives. … It was kind of a bummer for anyone who thought they were going to use (our past) to hang over our heads.”

According to Julie, some of her former fellow inmates have been watching the show and got in touch to ask if it was her under the Croissant outfit.

“I’ve had several calls about it,” he said we. “I said, ‘Who’s calling me from jail?’ And when I got the call, they said, ‘I swear that sounds like you.'”

“I got a text from her and she said, ‘Are you doing?’ masked singer?’ And I said, ‘What?'” Todd recalled. “And then he called and said, ‘Are you doing masked singer?’ And I said, ‘Why are you asking me that?’ She said: “Because I just got a text from someone on the lot saying they ran into my parents and they were the loveliest people.”

Todd didn’t flinch under her question and texted back, “People tell you I’m nice all the time.”

Even though Todd and Julie only got to perform once, they still technically made it further than Savannah since their elimination happened in the second episode instead of the first. Julie pointed out that she never tries to compete with her kids, but Todd didn’t hesitate to declare that he thinks the croissants were better than the Afghani.

“(Savannah) saw it the other night and said, ‘You did so well. You guys did great, and you made it farther than I did!” And I laughed and said, “Well, Savannah, if we hadn’t gotten farther than you, we really would have been in trouble, because you were awful,” Todd joked. “And she started laughing and said, ‘I don’t care, I had a good time… So now we’ve both done it, the next thing is to put nanny (Faye) there.”

The masked singer airs Wednesdays on Fox at 8 pm ET.
