Why the Irish politicians believe they can influence Washington

The St Patrick Day is associated with the fair side of traditions, from wearing a shamrock sprig, attending a church service to closing one (or queue) pints.

For politicians from Ireland island there is another annual tradition – a visit to Washington DC.

Each march of people including politicians, business traders and lobbyists from the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland will come to the capital of the United States.

This year, many politicians in northern Ireland refused to travel Donald Trump’s policies.

But what is the point of the events of the week running until St. Patrick’s day, and if they don’t happen, anyone get back home with any difference?

Two of the main things that Governments of Dublin and Belfast – as well as businesses – want to appear to go out on US trips and strong investment relationships.

Two men who went to Washington many times as part of St. Patrick events on the day without hesitation that trips can bring results.

Steve Aiken shares the Washington St Patrick’s day trips as the chief executive of the British-Irish Chamber of Commerce and later as leader in Ulster Unionist Party.

The Storatt Assembly member said it is impossible to build relationships to improve business and political relationships without face to face.

“It’s all about the ability to talk to people who don’t usually get the chance to talk to,” he said.

“As we know at the time of Covid, the zoom business is not necessarily business.

“You should have been in a room to do this and if you want to influence you should be talking; you can’t get it from 3,500 miles away.”

Aiken says that contrary what is mindful, it’s not “a holiday”.

“You need to be your short short and able to discuss the authority and you need to have answers to the questions – and you will ask for many questions and you have many questions to you,” he said.

The publisher of the Irish echo attended the White House twice in that role, but did not travel to Washington during his time as Northern Ireland’s finance minister collapsed two months before the 2017 festivities.

He said that the state of the United States of St. Patrick’s day is made of ideal time for Irish politicians and businesses to perform their pitch.

“You think of the biggest company in the US, all of them have promotions involved in St. Patrick’s day,” he said.

“You go to a US city where there are adverts anywhere.

“That means they are already doing some work for you.”

He said he believed that there was an important notice of financial services for Belfast in the coming days.

Except to help develop a positive relationship between Ireland’s Republic, Northern Ireland and the United States, more related to Direct – there are more than the Patrick’s Directs.

But the Esmond Birnie, Senior Economist at Ulster University, said a direct link is unattractive.

“It is impossible to count if political visits actually cause investment or marketing, so you cannot prove to be one way or another,” he said.

“In balance, benefits are likely to be smaller on the basics of training, skill, change and fertility and so on.”

Dr. Birnie says the location of the Northern Ireland in the UK and European Single Market, somewhat low European costs all US companies have been made by US companies.

“With everything that happens in the world, we’re more than listing.”

Ó Muilleoir, however, said.

“I used to meet the SWITZERLAND Consul in Manhattan and I was mocked by the sense that we had no more influence in New York,” he said

“He said he walked from Wall Street to Central Park and every block he saw the Irish flag – but he saw no switzerland flags.”

The Social Democratic and Labor Party also said that it does not attend if invited, and the Alliance Party is united.

Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengly, in the Democratic Unionist Party, says he goes to Washington DC, which is important to “maintain the long and rewarding in the US.

Ó Muilleeeoir said politicians should weigh the benefits and order.

“It’s probably the hardest time with St Patrick’s White House,” he said.

“We’re not just the people with behavioral problems; for all who can do their own choice.”
