General Hospital it was finally revealed who shot Drew Cain (Cameron Mathison) – but does he know the identity of the attacker?
“A lot remains to be developed,” General Hospital lead writer Chris Van Etten made fun of Soap opera digest in January 2026. “Revealing who shot Drew is, I think, the end of chapter one or chapter two, depending on how you’re building it.”
To understand what happened, we take a trip to September 2025 when a mysterious figure dressed in black shot Drew in a surprising twist, but he didn’t die. Fans began to theorize who could have done it, and literally everyone’s name was thrown into the mix.
“What we didn’t want to do was mislead the public,” Van Etten explained in the same interview. “The only way a good mystery works is if you give the audience all the information and allow them to draw conclusions over time.”
So who did it? There is a definite answer, but if you ask the writers, it’s not all down to one person.

Who Shot Drew On ‘General Hospital’?
Willow Tait Cain (Katelyn MacMullen) is on trial for shooting her husband, Drew. Despite denying her involvement, a January 2026 episode revealed that she is actually the one who committed the crime.
“So those who thought it was Willow in the beginning and continue to think so will be rewarded,” Van Etten added in his Soap opera digest interview

How was Drew’s shooter revealed on ‘General Hospital’?
An important clue helped make the revelation. Trina (Tabyana Ali) and Kai (Jens Austin Astrup) was at Willow’s house the night of the shooting and heard a specific ringtone ring at the time of the crime. After Willow took the stand and left the courthouse, her phone rang, and it was the same ringtone.
“Pretty much from the beginning, we wanted there to be a clue that eventually led to Willow,” Van Etten explained, noting that “only a few” viewers caught the ringtone. However, it started to become a major clue.
“It was there from the get-go, and we knew from the get-go that we wanted to have that evidence and put Trina and Kai in a position to know, but not realize they knew anything until almost the end,” he added.
What’s next for Drew on ‘General Hospital’?
According to the show’s head writers, that storyline will continue, especially now that Trina and Kai know the truth.
“They have to decide who they can go to with this information. But they themselves are also in danger because they were at home that night,” said a colleague. General Hospital writer Elizabeth Short added in the same Soap opera digest interview “It’s not like they weren’t at least guilty of not coming forward sooner. So what decision do they make? They have to turn to someone, but who do they go to?”
