The Handmaid’s Tale The cast is booked and busy with new projects: including the testaments spin-off — after the Hulu series came to a shocking end.
The Handmaid’s Tale universe came to life when Hulu adapted Margaret AtwoodThe 1985 novel of the same name from 2017. Atwood’s dystopian universe followed a future where low fertility rates have led to assigning women to men to bear children. Elisabeth Moss, Yvonne Strahovski, Madeline Brewer, Dowd, OT Fagbenle, Max Minghella, Samira Wiley i Amanda Brugel have led the cast since the show premiered in 2017.
After The Handmaid’s Talethe last season was announced in 2022creator Bruce Miller he stepped down as showrunner to work on it The Testaments as executive producers Eric Tuchman i Yahlin Chang took over the day-to-day duties of the flagship drama.
“We’re doing The Testaments, and it’s not going to track exactly,” Miller told TVLine at the time. “Margaret writes these absolutely delightfully specific characters. We had to get away from that in Handmaid’s, and we’ll have to get away from that in Testaments. Testaments will definitely be a sequel to the show.”
Fans of The Handmaid’s Tale have seen the cast change on and off screen since the series premiered. Set 15 years later, The Testaments is narrated by Aunt Lydia, as viewers, is transported back to the dystopian future with new characters like Agnes from Gilead and Daisy from Canada as they collect and smuggle out of the country incriminating information about the Gilead regime. Agnes and Daisy pose as “Pearl Girls” to infiltrate Canada, while Aunt Lydia acts as an undercover source in Gilead.
“Even though I couldn’t continue Offred’s story, I could continue with three more people concerned about these events and tell the story of the beginning of the end, because we know from The Handmaid’s Tale that Gilead fades,” Atwood told reporters at an event in 2019. “It’s no longer present 200 years in the future, because how do these symposia collapse? The regimes disappear? I was interested in exploring that.
He continued, “There (are) some new costume choices in this book. Human beings throughout time love costumes that tell you who you’re looking at, like football teams and stuff like that. So yeah, we have some new costumes.”
Atwood said she kept Miller up to date on her plans com The Handmaid’s Tale was coming until the end
“I read the scripts; I make notes,” he added. “I have influence, but no real power. But luckily, we agree most of the time.”
In addition to Dowd, Chase Infiniti, Lucy Halliday, Rowan Blanchard, Amy Seimetz, Mabel Li, Brad Alexander i Mattea Comfort make up the rest of the cast. Hulu confirmed that The Testaments will premiere in April 2026.
