Artem KariininUp to a week ago, the Artem Kariinin and his unit performed frequent boundaries in Ukraine in Sudzha in Russian.
He showed me the video taken by a phone on their last trip, because Ukraine’s forces retreated from the Russian Kurss region. It shows them to make their way past many burns in military and civilian cars.
A soldier armed with a shotgun, their last line of defense, scans the horizon for Russian drones. Nothing else, a fly toward the back of their truck. Sparks fly, but they continue to walk.
Artem says they are lucky – the paid fee is not enough enough to prevent them.
Another truck is not too much. It’s already in the flames.
Artem admits that Ukraine’s withdrawal from Sudzha, the largest Ukrainian city held in Kursk, “is not well organized”.
“It was a great riot,” he told me. “Many units are left in disruption. I think the problem is to withdraw that it’s too late.”
It has not helped, he said, because units operate without proper communication. StarLink Satellite Systems they normally depend on not working within Russia.

The 27-year-old soldier still looks at Kursk offensive like more successful. Artem says it forces Russia to move its forces from the east. Most Ukrainian troops have yet to escape the time – even if many walk.
But he believes surprise to surprise Ukraine launched in Russian territory, being launched in August, very deep and more Harge on a main road for supplies and supplies.
While Artem and his men fled for their lives, President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin talked to the phone about the test ending the war. Artem says he knows that “unreasonable”.
“For me these calls between Trump and Putin are just surreal,” he said. “Trump wants to finish the war because he promised to do it – and Putin wants to fool the Trump to keep his war.”
Artem, whose house is in the present occupied region of Lukask, telling me he felt disappointed in the US and Trump. “What can I feel if they just want to give my house?”
Artem KariininArtem says he never believed Putin was willing to sell any part of Russia for occupied Ukrainian territories. But he still believes that the offensive of Kursk is important to protect its own boundary. Ukrainian troops may have been forced to withdraw, but they still occupy the upper ground on the border of Sumy.
Ukraine continues to attack cross-bords – not just in Kursk, but Belgorod too.
Serhiy’s battalion attack helps plan attacks – finding a way to Russian mines and anti-tank barriers known as “dragon teeth”.
We join him on a night mission to find and regain armored vehicles that require well. This is the safest time to get close to the Russian border.
Serhaton himself is not a stranger in Russia: He was born there. He has a Citizenship in Belorussian, but he chose to fight for Ukraine. He justifies Ukrainian innings in his former house. Russia also said, trying to make a buffer zone inside the Ukrainian territory.
Traveling to his Ukraed Ukraine-made car, Serhiy still lists the likely threat, now we are less than Russia’s rocks, rockets and artillery, and drones inserted into thermal imaging cameras.
BBC / Matthew GoddardHer own car is equipped with electronic counter-steps to jam enemy drones, but even those who do not work against drones run through fiber wires. Those unstoppable, even in some Ukrainian routes are now trying to netting to try catching the drones before they hit their target.
Our original search near the Russian border for a damaged bradle armored vehicle left when serial receives the intelligence that Russian drones operate nearby. However, he tried to find another broken Bradley where the risks were small.
He and his driver still need to overcome obstacles on the way. Trees and branches are inhabited by their way – residues from a recent strike in Russian air. We can see more blasts in the distance, in short orange moves to the sky orange.
Later Serhi found his broken Bradley. It has been taken from the battlefield across the boundary and loaded with a truck carried out.
The Bradley commander confirms me that they fight in Russia. He describes situations throughout the limit “hard, but we continue”.
BBC / Matthew GoddardBradley is another reminder to trust Ukraine in US military support. That is now as less sure to focus Trump in peace discussion. Serhi says it’s obvious to him with “carrying behind the back of Ukraine”.
I asked Serhiy if he thought that European countries could fill in any part of the left of the US. Is a “European” coalition in the ready “enough to guarantee Ukraine’s security?
“I think if America doesn’t help Ukraine, then a ceasefire agreement soon – but in bad terms for Ukraine,” Serhiy replied.
“Europe is clearly unable to resolve this conflict. They are not very strong. They move their own economies instead of thinking about security.”
Serhi says he wants to end the war. Like many Ukrainians, he wants to see peace – but not at any price.
