Two days after Atlas Openai, Microsoft launched a very similar AI browser

Microsoft released new features for its AI Assistant, including ambitious project The one that builds artificial intelligence immediately becomes one of the most central products. More than a simple addition, something new Copiilot mode of Microsoft’s Edge browser Is the company taking on the long hyped-hylor AI category and is an intelligent and flexible AI assistant that follows you while you browse the web.

Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft AI, even described the new product in these terms in the announcement. “COPILOT MODE in Edge evolves into an AI browser that becomes a dynamic, intelligent companion,” Suleyman wrote in the announcement post. “With permission, copylot can see and reason in open tabs, summarize and compare information, and also act like an order.”

The announcement comes just two days after a similar launch from Openai, which showcased the new Atlas Browser. Of course, the release of Copielot is scheduled for several weeks, and the new mode of copiilot may be here for several months. The company did not come across the idea of an AI-assisted web browser. But the visual similarities between the two products are hard to ignore.

These are two pictures of the same thing. Copilot for Edge background is darker, has text instead of logo, and close/minimize button follows windows convention rather than macos convention. Beyond that, copilot puts the “ride” function in a new tab instead of a split screen… but that’s about it. It’s pretty much the same product.

Part of the equation is functionality: people like clean browsers, and there are only so many ways to integrate a chatbot window into a “Tab” screen. For users, the main difference will come from the underlying model, so maybe a little facial similarity won’t make a difference.

Browsers usually look the same. But given the stakes of the AI race and the tense situation between the two companies, it seems important that we get both browsers in the same week.
