The IBF has postponed the hearing of the bids for the final of the heavyweight championship between Frank Sanchez and Richard Torrez Jr., and returned the review to Tuesday, January 27. The review was scheduled for Thursday before the two parties requested another extension, which was accepted by the sanctioning body.
This is the latest delay in the fight that was scheduled almost two months ago. The previous days were passed without an agreement, and the most reliable reading is that the new day will give both camps a final window to close the terms and avoid a financial sale. That result never came despite repeated attempts.
The fight is heavyweight in the division as the winner will become the official IBF challenger for unification heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk, although the timing of any official duty remains undefined.
Sanchez is a difficult assignment to place. Many heavyweights turned down the opportunity early in the process, leaving the eliminator on hold for months. Torrez Jr. It remained in the process because of other serious conditions that were rejected.
The 2020 Olympic silver medalist has clearly expressed his desire to fight and has not backed down like others.
Torrez’s passion matches his style and his work. He’s young, he’s always under pressure, and he’s heavy-handed. His most recent outing, a first-round victory last November in Mexico, has kept his momentum going as the man sits down to destroy. The fight that brought him back into line was the same fight that first forced him to pass Sanchez last year.
For Sanchez, the situation is more peaceful. He hasn’t fought since last February, when he came back to regain composure after his loss to Agit Kabayel in Riyadh. Since then, his path has been defined by procrastination rather than play.
Unless the purse bid is stopped or is stopped by an old agreement, the eliminator remains the point. Torrez has shown passion for what others have not. Whether that decision will lead to a real fight now lies in the clock rather than hope.
