Catherine O’Hara‘s Schitt’s Creek the co-stars are mourning the death of their former co-star.
“What a gift to have been able to dance in the warm glow of Catherine O’Hara’s brilliance all these years.” Dan Levy wrote via Instagram on Friday, January 30. “Having spent more than fifty years working with my father, Catherine was an extended family before she played my family. It’s hard to imagine a world without her.”
O’Hara died on Friday, January 30, at the age of 71. O’Hara’s agency, CAA, shared through a statement who died “at his home in Los Angeles after a brief illness.”
A spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department later confirmed this Us Weekly that paramedics were called to the actress’ home in Brentwood at 4:48 a.m. Friday for a 911 call. O’Hara was transported in “serious condition” to the hospital. The official cause of death has not yet been released.
O’Hara played Rose family matriarch Moira on the beloved sitcom. The role was one of her most outstanding performances to date. He starred alongside Dan, Eugene Levy i Annie Murphy like the rest of the Rose clan. The cast also included Emily Hampshire, Chris Elliott, Jennifer Robertson, Noah Reid, Dustin Milligan and more
Her portrayal of Moira won praise from fans and critical acclaim. O’Hara won a 2020 Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her performance in the series’ final season.
Before his death, O’Hara expressed his interest in being reunited with her Schitt’s Creek family for potential rebirth.
“I would love (to do it). We did a little bit of touring after the show ended, and it was really fun,” he said in a 2024 interview with people.
O’Hara added that he would love the opportunity to work alongside Dan, Eugene and Murphy once again.
“I would love to be with all of them again,” he added. “Making a movie would be wonderful. Yes, I hope it happens.”
O’Hara also expressed her gratitude to Dan and Eugene, who co-created the comedy, for giving her the opportunity to have a say behind the scenes.
“It’s a gift to work with people you can collaborate with. And they wrote such great scripts, and it was so fun and so lovely,” he recalled. “And really, I hate to say that COVID was good for anything, but we were very lucky with Netflix showing the show. So many families were hiding then, parents and grown children hiding under the same roof.”

“This is really shocking. I was a huge fan of Catherine O’Hara long before I had the chance to work with her,” he wrote via Instagram along with a slideshow of his memories with the actress. “I was so nervous the first time I met her, and she was even nicer and funnier than I could have imagined.”

“The second photo is of me and her standing in line for popcorn at the Emmys. She had just come off stage after presenting an award and she was nominated that year, but she stood in line like a normal person,” he continued. “But she was no ordinary person. She was a true comedic genius who brought so many laughs to so many people. She will be greatly missed. RIP Catherine.”

After collaborating with O’Hara for five decades on various screen projects, the loss was palpable for Eugene Levy.
Eugene, who portrayed O’Hara’s husband on screen Schitt’s Creek, shared a statement with Us Weekly on January 30.
“Words seem inadequate to express the loss I feel today. I had the honor of knowing and working with the great Catherine O’Hara for over fifty years. From our beginnings on the Second City stage, on SCTV, to the films we made with Chris Guest, to our six glorious years in Schitt’s Creekloved our working relationship, but most of all our friendship,” said Eugene, 79. “And I will miss her. My heart goes out to Bo, Matthew, Luke and the entire O’Hara family.”

Sara, 39 years old, paid tribute to O’Hara via Instagram on Friday, sharing how devastated she was to lose her co-star.
“This one cuts deep. What an honor it has been to know, work and love Catherine O’Hara,” Sarah wrote. “Hello to all you brought into this world – you will be greatly, greatly missed. ❤️“
