The outage affecting AWS’s web hosting services has hit a large part of the web, including websites, banks and some government services.
Amazon said on Monday morning that the outage had been “easily measured” and that most services had returned to normal after several hours of Internet downtime.
The Internet giant blamed the outage, which began at 3 a.m. on the Eastern US coast, on DNS, the system that converts web addresses to IP addresses so customer applications can run.
While some glitches can be resolved quickly, DNS can sometimes take longer to resolve.

Millions of companies and organizations rely on AWS to power their websites, applications and other critical online systems. The company has data centers around the world, and Amazon is said to have at least 30% of the total cloud market.
Amazon did not provide a reason for what caused the outage.
