The 92-year-old president of Cameroon won a controversial eighth term, in a fiercely contested election.

Paul Biya, who is the oldest head of state in the world, won 53.7% of the vote, compared to 35.2% of the opposition leader Bachiroma who declared.

Before the announcement, Tchiroma Bakary – a former Biya Ally – he insisted that he won the election, but the ruling democratic movement in the Danger of Danger.

The election, which was held on 12 October, was marred by deadly violence, and in recent days, hundreds of supporters of Tchirhaoma rejected the protest administrations, and joined the security forces.

The situation in the capital, Yaoundé, is so extraordinary that almost all shops and schools remain closed, while most civilian servants and office staff remain at home.

In total, 10 candidates are running for the Presidential Office, including former Prime Minister Bello Bounari.

The voter turnout was 58%.

At least 10 petitions that allow the election to be corrupted have been rejected by the constitutional council.

YAOundé residents expressed their opinions on Biya’s controversial victory.

“We are at the beginning of another nightmare,” Amungwa Nicodemus told the BBC.

“The economy is declining, corruption is endemic, many things are happening.”

Another resident, Abolo Denis, urged Cameroonians to accept the outcome, saying peace was paramount.

“What struck me first, after the announcement of the results, was the silence – the silence of the grave,” said Vivian Muma, in the northern city of Bamenda.

“The silence says it all. Cameroonians decide, but those who (make) decisions, they decide,” he said.

President Byaya, who came to power in 1982, has yet to speak publicly to Cameroonians after his election on Monday, but the administration is “under the management of greatness and hope” in online posts.

He is rarely seen in public and is known to spend time outside of Africa in Swiss Hotels. This long absence coupled with his old age has, in the past, led rumors that he is dead.

While his leadership was praised for the expansion of public schools and universities, and his Dispute management in Bakassi – which saw the oil-rich peninsula given to Cameroon instead of Nigeria – his owner also faced criticism.
