Syria’s al-Sharaa met with Putin in Moscow for the second time in four months

Syria’s interim leader arrived in Moscow on January 28 for his second visit in less than four months. Moscow is working to build relations with Ahmed al-Sharaa and ensure a permanent military presence in the country, which serves to strengthen its influence in the Middle East. The meeting came after Russia withdrew its forces from the Kurdish-held Qamishli airfield in northeastern Syria earlier this week.
