After five seasons shot over nearly a decade, a show like strange things you are likely to face certain continuity errors.
The hit Netflix series returned with Part 1 of its fifth and final season on Wednesday, November 26, with a scene showing flashbacks of Will (Noah Schnapp) and Mike (Finn Wolfhard). One key moment featured Will as a younger man building his iconic Castle Byers with brother Jonathan (Charlie Heaton), which caught the attention of followers.
“Jonathan once said that when he and Will built Castle Byers, it was raining and they both got so soaked that they ended up being sick for a whole week,” read a post via X alongside clips of the flashback sequence.
Social media users pointed out that the images were taken on a sunny day: with Will and Jonathan in good condition despite the circumstances.
“It also doesn’t make sense that they’re acting so normal when it’s literally the day their dad left the house,” one viewer wrote about the context of Will and Jonathan creating the background area to distract from their parents getting divorced.
Although many agreed on the error, others tried to rationalize it the subject

“I explain this because they probably started building the castle before Loni left, and the day she finally left, Jonathan decided to finish it with Will so he would have a safe place,” another fan of the show replied.
Elsewhere in the season, a poster of Will during the time period he was missing marked him as 12, while other dialogue in the show claimed he was 11 at the time. This added to a larger fan conspiracy about the “birthday gate,” where viewers question the inconsistency surrounding Will’s special day.
Season 4 iinspired confusion on the screen when viewers were quick to point out potential subtext for Will’s aloof demeanor.
“They forgot Will’s birthday. I’m crying,” one social media user wrote in 2022 via X alongside a screenshot of footage taken of Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) at the skating rink in episode 2. The date of the tape said March 22, which Joyce (Winona Ryder) previously confirmed during Will’s birthday in season 2.
The official Stranger Things writer’s room account previously appeared to mock Will’s birthday others may forget him, tweeting in March 2020: “Some friends forget to play dnd and some forget birthdays, it happens.”
Some fans pointed out that this explains why Will is so upset throughout the season. Others, however, questioned whether the error was intentional. “I’ll give my opinion… I don’t think the duffers forgot Will’s birthday or got it wrong. They had three whole years to make this season. They took care of every detail and it’s too weird that they chose March 22nd of ALL dates to be a coincidence,” read one response to the continuity controversy.
strange things returns with volume 2 on December 25th and the finale is out on December 31st on Netflix.
