Ben Whittaker is heading to the other side of the Atlantic. While an official opponent has been confirmed, manager Eddie Hearn has confirmed that the 2020 Olympic silver medalist will make his American debut in early April 2026.
Whittaker currently sits at #3 in the WBC light heavyweight rankings, a position bolstered by his first-round knockout of Benjamin Gavazi in November 2025. Despite the top spot, the 28-year-old’s career is under fire from fans who feel he is protecting his talent. For an Olympian of similar strength, many expected a better climb to the top of the world championship. Instead, some critics argue that he is “slowly checking.”
The Quest for a Counter-America
Whittaker recently stated that he wants a “high level” opponent for his US bow. Due to his desire to face an American, the options at 175 pounds are limited.
Khalil Coe (#14 WBC): This is the most logical choice. Coe is also under the Matchroom banner, making booking easier. However, Coe struggled in his most recent win over Jesse Hart in January, looking tired at times.
Najee Lopez (#15 WBC): Another American option, although he doesn’t have the same promotional ties as Coe.
The media has floated the name David Morrell, but it seems unlikely. Morrell is highly skilled and has the kind of power that can make Whittaker’s defense work.
Fans Don’t Believe
Whittaker’s doubt stems from his performance in October 2024 against Liam Cameron. In that bout, Whittaker appeared to be struggling with Cameron’s body before a dramatic incident that sent both fighters crashing to the ropes. Whittaker was unable to continue, and the fight went to a special decision. Although he won the rematch in April 2025, the memory of that first fight still lingers in the minds of fans.
Whittaker’s quick victory over the unusual Gavazi did little to stop those who believed he was being made into a star rather than earning the title. If he’s going to live up to his “peer talent”, April’s opponent will have to offer more than just a name on a resume.
