Star Wars creator George Lucas has bought a £40 million (about $52 million) mansion in London, according to reports.
Lucas, 81, bought what Bloomberg described on Tuesday 4 November as a house in a ‘privileged enclave’ of north-west London in September. The house was owned by a senior lawyer of the city, for Bloomberg i The Times of London.
Outlets report that Lucas’ purchase is one of the biggest in the London property market this year. The time reports it is the biggest real estate purchase in the British capital since the fashion designer Tom Ford as purchased a house in Chelsea for £80 million ($104 million) last November.
Lucas also owns the famous Skywalker Ranch, his 4,700-acre estate that includes the filmmaker’s offices, the headquarters of various business operations and film production facilities, in Marin County, California.
In December 2019, the director purchased a waterfront property in Carpinteria, California for $28 million, for The Wall Street Journal. The sprawling site includes a Cape Cod-style home, guest house, tree house and barn. The outlet reported that the home is located next to the Carpinteria beach house he purchased for $19.5 million in 2010. The property features a four-bedroom contemporary home, a two-bedroom guest house, a yoga room, an exercise room and a patio with a pool, for Architecture summary.
Carpinteria, located approximately 11 miles from Santa Barbara, is a popular destination for Hollywood stars looking for a quieter life. It includes other celebrities who owned property in the city at the end of 2019 Ellen DeGeneres – who has since then moved to UK with his wife Portia de Rossi — i Kevin Costner.
“It’s more secluded than Malibu or Santa Monica or any of those places,” luxury real estate agent Tim Hoctor, who represented Costner in the sale of his home, said al Wall Street Journal in December 2019. Hoctor noted that Costner ultimately decided to keep his property.
Lucas, for his part, earned his fortune as a creator of the popular Star Wars i Indiana Jones franchises In 2012, he sold his production company, Lucasfilm, and the rights to both works, to Disney for $4.05 billion in cash and stock.
“For the last 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been watching Star Wars passed down from one generation to the next,” Lucas said at the time. “Now is the time to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to establish the transition during my lifetime. Under Disney’s direction, Lucasfilm produced a new Star Wars trilogy released between 2015 and 2019, several spin-offs, including the Disney+ TV show The Mandalorianand a new one Indiana Jones movie released in 2023.
