Emmanuel Feji-Waboso has given England an injury scare ahead of their Six Nations opener against Wales after not completing training on Thursday.
Feiyi-Waboso started the session at the team’s training base in Bagshot, but withdrew with an unspecified leg problem and the extent of the damage is being assessed by doctors.
The 23-year-old is England’s main threat with his explosive carries and electric footwork, earning comparisons to cross-code great Jason Robinson from assistant coach Kevin Sinfield in the autumn.
“The only little concern we have is Manny. He retired at the end of practice, at the very end,” defensive backs coach Richard Wigglesworth said.
“His leg hurt, it was nothing special and he left. It was nothing special, but he missed the last 60 seconds of practice, so we’re waiting to investigate that a little more.”
If Fahey-Waboso is ruled out of Wales’ visit to the Allianz Stadium on Saturday, the most likely replacement on the right wing would be the versatile and experienced Elliot Daly.
Feiyi-Waboso missed the 2025 Six Nations after undergoing shoulder surgery but returned against the USA during the summer tour and then started all four autumn Tests, scoring against Fiji and Argentina.
He has amassed seven tries in his 13 Tests with the running threat making him one of the first names on the list. Henry Arundel starts on the left wing.
England will be led in Saturday’s clash at Twickenham by Jamie George, who replaces Maro Itoje after the regular captain was named on the bench after missing some of the pre-tournament training camp in Girona to attend the funeral of his mother Florence.
George was captain in 2024 when England won five of their 12 Tests – a sequence that included a string of narrow defeats, including three against New Zealand – and is delighted to be back in charge.
“Brilliant and unexpected. I never saw that happen again after our summer tour in Argentina,” said George, who will retire after the 2027 World Cup.
“It’s a privilege. I love this job, it’s the best thing in the world to be able to do this. It’s one week and one week only, so I’m making the most of it.
“Maro is the captain of this team. It’s his team and he’s doing an incredible job, so I feel a responsibility, as I should, to make sure you do it right.”
Crisis-hit Wales are underdogs to triumph at Twickenham, but George believes it is a “free swing” for Steve Tandy’s side. He insists his team is embracing the expectations created by winning 11 consecutive Tests.
“I’ve been around too long not to be the favorite. The elephant in the room – we’ve been in good form recently. We haven’t run away from that,” George said.
