Will Martin O’Neill take Celtic to the top of the Premiership before bidding farewell to Celtic, and can Danny Rohl get more out of his Rangers front line?
Derek McInnes is desperate for Hearts to stay top, while both Kilmarnock and St Mirren know their dismal runs must end before the real relegation battle begins.
After an entertaining weekend card, we have five games to look forward to in the middle of the week.
Let’s take a look at the talking points.
O’Neill’s final farewell?
After his shock return to Celtic, it’s now a long farewell for Martin O’Neill.
The 73-year-old remains in charge for the home game against Dundee while the club finalize a deal for Wilfrid Nancy will become the club’s next permanent manager.
O’Neill has a perfect home record with four Premier League wins and a League Cup semi-final win against Rangers.
Another win on Wednesday would see them top of the table with a game in hand if Hearts miss out on Dundee United.
Should he stay in power a little longer, given the impact he’s made in five short weeks?
Daizen Maeda and Reo Hatate struggled for form earlier this season but now look to be back to their best.
O’Neill also gave fringe players like Auston Trusty, Callum Osmond and Jonny Kenny a chance, and they repaid him.
After Sunday’s win at Hibs, O’Neill said Ski Sports: “Was the answer. Some players can really, really play this game,”
“They just lost a little bit of confidence.”
“Half the team wouldn’t know who I am. They’re thinking, this gentleman arrived, quite old, gray haired. Who is he? And did Santa Claus come early? But it encouraged me to be around young people.”
“I’ve often thought that, you know, if you can praise players well, they’ll take a bit of criticism, even in this day and age.”
Can Rohl get more out of his legacy Rangers team?
“I support them, I will help them, I have to lift them up.”
Rangers manager Danny Roll knows he has to back his players, despite their goalless draw with Falkirk. But there’s no doubt they’ll be desperate for the January transfer window to add some much-needed firepower.
He has made changes to his frontline but Burns goalkeeper Scott Bain has barely been tested at Ibrox.
Oliver Antman, Thelo Aasgaard and Bojan Miovski, who joined in the summer, were ineffective. Nedim Bajrami did little to prove his worth in just his second start of the season.
Djeidi Gassama probably had the best chance but was still far from convincing, with Youssef Cermiti injured again and a £10m addition.
They visit Dundee United on Wednesday night. Only a win will guarantee them to stay fourth in the Scottish Premiership.
James Tavernier’s late goal denied United a rare win at Ibrox back in October – Jim Goodwin’s side will be looking for revenge as they also try to end a four-game winless run in the league.
Will Hearts return to winning ways to heap more misery on Kilmarnock?
Derek McInnes was confident he would get a reaction from his Hearts players after Aberdeen ended their unbeaten start to the Premier League. Instead, they struggled at Motherwell.
Fir Park is a tough place, but the Jambos were nowhere near the level they have reached in previous games this season.
After their brilliant start under McInnes took them to the title, they are now just one win from five and failure to beat struggling Kilmarnock on Wednesday could see them surrender top spot to Celtic ahead of the trip to Parkhead on Sunday, live Ski Sports.
Stuart Kettlewell takes Killie to Tynecastle Park looking for a first league win since October 4 after snapping a six-game losing streak with a 1-1 draw at Dundee United in the last time-out.
Can tough love see St Mirren return to winning ways?
“You can’t keep putting your arm around everyone; sometimes you need the truth.”
“And the truth is that we are fighting for our lives.”
Stephen Robinson did not take a single shot after a 3-1 defeat by Dundee left St Mirren in 11th place in the Scottish Premiership.
The Buddies are without a win in their last seven league games ahead of their midweek trip to face resurgent Aberdeen.
Jimmy Thelin’s switch to a 3-4-2-1 seems to have done the trick for the Dons after a poor start to the season, and they have won five of their last seven in the Premiership.
St Mirren have enjoyed more wins against Aberdeen than any other team in recent seasons, but it was the Pittodrie side who took the points in the first meeting this season.
Will Motherwell continue to share the Old Firm?
Hearts may be the best so far, but it’s Motherwell who are tearing the Old Firm apart after a six-game unbeaten run.
Jens Bertel Askou currently has the Premiership’s top scorer in their ranks – Tawanda Maswanhise has scored eight goals so far. He scored against Hearts on Saturday to have it ruled out.
They travel to Falkirk looking to stay above Rangers, but Burns will pose a real challenge having only lost once at home in the league this season.
John McGlinn’s side are unbeaten in four as they continue to impress in their return to the top flight.
