Discussion of Armistice
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiha said Ukrainian and Russian leaders must meet in person to resolve the most difficult remaining issues in peace talks and that only US President Donald Trump has the power to broker a deal to end the four-year-old war.
Sibiha said that from the 20-point peace plan that formed the basis of the recent tripartite negotiations, only “a few” items remained, but the “most sensitive and most difficult” items would be dealt with at the leaders’ level.
Sibiha added that in the event of a ceasefire agreement, the US has told Ukraine it is ready to pass security guarantees in Congress and then provide a security “backstop” to support the peace deal, although no US troops will be deployed to Ukraine.
Sibiha said France and other countries beyond the United Kingdom have expressed readiness to send troops to Ukraine as a deterrent if a deal is reached.
