Rose McGowan states that enchanted the producers monitored her weight while she starred in the show.
“They would circle me to check my weight when I came back” at the start of each season, McGowan, 52, said on the Tuesday, Jan. 6, episode of Paul C. Brunsonof “we need to talk” podcast.
He added that he believes they were “inspecting their product.”
McGowan recalled that this behavior, at the time, was treated as “completely fine”.
She played Paige Matthews for five seasons enchantedthe WB fantasy series about San Francisco sisters who have secret supernatural powers. It was produced by Aaron Spelling i Brad Coreamong others.
enchanted ran from 1998 to 2006 and originally starred Shannen Doherty, Holly Marie Combs i Alyssa Milano like a trio of benevolent witches. Doherty, who played Prue Halliwell, left the show after three seasons. McGowan was introduced as half-sister Paige in season four. He had previously made his mark on more edgy fare, having starred in the films scream (1996), Devil in the flesh (1998) and Break your jaw (1999).
During his interview with Brunson, 50, McGowan recalled the pressure to tone down his style and seem “so running” in the middle of it enchanted to run
“I knew the knives would be out,” he said, referring to the aftermath of Doherty’s departure. “That the fans would want … the person, the other character, that they loved.”
To endear himself to these viewers, McGowan “decided to base it on my character i love lucy. Lucille Ball. What if she was young and in this situation, a little lovable, like a little silly and soft? I would raise my voice and not be threatening. Because it “scared” people.”
before enchanted“I would dress up if I ever had to go to an event,” McGowan said. “Or doing my own makeup, stuff like that. And then, during that whole period that I was on that show, everything changed. All of a sudden, you had to have a stylist. You had to pay $6,000 a month to a stylist.”
McGowan said stylists would reject the clothes she wanted to wear, telling her “‘This is too editorial,’ meaning it’s too bold and trendy.” She said they selected dresses that were more “red carpet.” And then they’d put makeup balloons (on her) and giant helmet hair.”
After the show ended, McGowan and Doherty formed a friendship. In August 2024, a month after Doherty died of cancer at the age of 53, McGowan launched his podcast, “Let’s Be Clear”.
“If I have any regrets, I wish I had met her sooner,” he said at the time, adding: “We were really at odds with each other. I was just told she was fired and no one was talking about her.”
McGowan refused to speak ill of Doherty when he joined enchanted in place
“They wanted me to start a war with her, and I said, ‘Absolutely not.’ I’m not going to start a war with her,” he said. “And to her credit, she didn’t either.”
McGowan said “the biggest misconception about (Doherty) was that she was tough. But at the same time, she was the truth, but that’s not who she was natively. And I’d say that was the biggest misconception about me as well. We both like to laugh. Soft, underneath it all.”
