Reddit is starting a limited profile test, which provides a gray distance marker next to the username of a famous person or business.
“This feature is designed to help redditors understand who is involved when it comes to verification, whether it’s hosting experts or celebrities, or brand reporting information,” wrote Reddit In a blog postSee rank-.
Believe it or not, there was a time on the internet where the verification checkmark only confirmed that the famous person is them, and not your mark pay a monthly fee for musk elon and/or Mark ZuckerbergSee rank-. But reddit has decided that, in fact, it’s a good idea to verify the accounts of public figures in an effort to reduce the spread of misinformation.
Reddit acknowledges that pseudonyms are a major part of its culture, allowing users to express themselves more openly than they would if their names say so. But Reddit says this feature is completely voluntary and opt-in. The verification feature is lacking in order to show special elite status, but it is easier for regular users and subreddit moderators to quickly choose whether someone is correct about their identity.
The absence of signs does not mean that the person created it, though. Reddit is opting for this feature with a low profile, and even though it’s making sure there’s a full rollout, it’s still possible that some prominent redditors won’t check it out.
Tony HawkFor example, casually post on the skateboarding subreddit, just chatting about your favorite sport with like-minded fans. They are just like us! But he blew it a bit when he shared a video of himself skating on R/Oldkaters, because maybe a lot of old 57-year-olds do it.
When checking Reddit is in the Alfa rollout, users will find that active contributors are well and “trusted partners,” which have been cleared. Having a checkmark does not grant the user any special privileges. However, users will not be eligible for alerts if they have NSFW profiles, or if they primarily participate in NSFW communities.
Right now, Reddit is manually profiling, but it says it will Use a third-party process ahead.
It may not be a coincidence that Reddit is exploring at the same time, that co-founder Alexis Alexis Oranian is launching a social aggregator, Digg. Founder of Digg expressed concern If the Internet is flooded with bots and AI agents, and want digg to be a place where you can connect with others. He has said are looking for zero evidence As a potential way to verify that the user is human.
Sam Altman, Co-Founder and CEO of Openai, has also explored ways to verify humans online. World, Altman Human Verification Projectis expected to release an application this week that also focuses on keeping bots.
