Indonesia’s president tells survivors of last week’s devastating floods that Asian governments are stepping up their response to the growing disaster. More than 1,000 dead in three countries.
Hundreds more are missing from floods and landslides in the past week, with at least 502 dead in Indonesia, 335 in Sri Lanka and 176 in Thailand, officials said.
With some parts of Indonesia inaccessible after the disaster damaged roads and downed communication lines, residents of affected areas are relying on planes to deliver supplies.
The floods displaced 290,700 people in North Sumatra, West Sumatra and Aceh provinces, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) said.
Sri Lankan authorities said on Monday that rescuers were still searching for 366 missing people. About 148,000 people have been placed in temporary shelters after heavy rains last week flooded homes, fields and roads and triggered landslides – mainly in the central tea-growing highlands.
Authorities in Thailand have worked to clear roads and restore infrastructure in the southern part of the country, where 1.4 million homes and 3.8 million people have been affected by severe flooding, government spokesman Siripong Angkasakulakiat said.
The Ministry of Home Affairs will set up public kitchens to provide freshly cooked food to the affected residents, he added.
