Pregnant woman killed in shooting was having child: Georgia family


A man is accused of shooting a woman who was seven months pregnant, killing her and her unborn child, authorities in Georgia say.

The officers found the 22-year-old woman Theonia Stokesdead when they arrived at shooting scene as well as another person, 25 years old Curdary Williams. Both had been injured in a shooting that erupted in Monroe early Sunday, Jan. 25, according to the Monroe Police Department.

Stokes had been a “innocent bystander” and was with Williams, her boyfriend, when the shooting occurred, her family told WSB-TV.

Williams fathered Stokes’ unborn child, her family said.

Now, 36 years old Dorreous Brooksa Monroe resident, faces charges of murder and feticide in the deaths of Stokes and her unborn child, police said.

Brooks was arrested late Tuesday, Jan. 27, in connection with the shooting that killed Stokes, the Monroe Police Department said in a news release issued that day.

Information on whether Stokes had retained legal representation was not immediately available.

Stokes, a student teacher who was about to earn her bachelor’s degree from Kennesaw State University, was already the mother of a 2-year-old girl11 Live informed. She was due to give birth to her baby in April.

“My sister didn’t deserve this,” Teonia’s sister, Jadah Stokeshe told the press.

Teonia, who had three siblings, including Jadah, was killed days before her 23rd birthday, the outlet reported.

“We were making funeral arrangements for his birthday…his birthday,” Teonia’s aunt, Cal Durhamhe told 11Alive.

“She was full of hope, she was full of life, she was full of promise,” Durham said, adding that “And all she wanted on this earth was to be loved.”

After the shooting, which sent Williams to a hospital, Monroe Police Department detectives “gathered evidence, conducted interviews and executed search warrants as part of an extensive investigation in search of the truth,” police also said.

Authorities did not specify a specific motive for the shooting.

Brooks was denied bail when he appeared in court on Monday, Jan. 26, WSB-TV reported.

Speaking to the television station about her sister’s death, Jadah said: “I would have hugged her longer before walking out the door if I had known it would be the last time I would see her.”

According to Teonia’s family, Teonia’s 2-year-old daughter cannot fully understand that her mother is dead, the television station reported.

Before the shooting, Teonia had planned to teach at an elementary school, her family said.

In a statement shared with the Marietta Daily Journal about Teonia’s death, Kennesaw State University said, “We mourn his loss and your loved ones are in our thoughts.
