The Liberal Armenian government has never been an ally conservative apostolic church (AAC), but when the Prime Minister Nikol Pashinan has managed to open a deeper part.
“Your grace, cheating your uncle’s wife. What do you want from me?” Pashinan said.
He also accuses the highest spiritual leader – Catholicas Karekin II – to break his promise to the Celiban and father of a child, who calls him to resign. The BBC approached the church for comment but no answer.
So far the Church and Government found a way of being with, but the row threatens to divide a polarized points in the next year’s election.
It also harms peace talks with the potential to re-conquer the whole region in South Caucasus, after the defeat of Armenia’s defeat in Azerbaijan.
Armenia was believed to be the first country to create Christian religion in the state, after the king’s king was baptized in 301ad. Although there is a separation in the Church and State by law, Armenian Constitution recognizes AAC “as a National Church”.
The Church did not mention the allegations but said that the Prime Minister was looking for “to silence its voice”. It also remarks that the government says nothing to the things of the church management.
If true, the allegation of Pashinyan would make Catholics inappropriate for office. Under the Church-rods, only monks that make a celbacy promise can be selected a Catholic.
On these grounds of Pashiran today Karekin’s resignation demands, even if there is no church jurisdiction. He did not show evidence but threatened to release it.
Passion also attacks other older clergy, including an arsbishop with a deal, with a unique allegation of “his uncle’s wife’s wife.
The opposition parties and two of the former Presidents of Armenia, Levon Ter-Petrosian and Serzh Sargsyan, rallied behind the Church and condemned Passonan’s actions against it.
The Government of the Church government has worsened after defeat of the neighboring Azerbaijan, in join Karekin II from various political prophets to complete.
Pashyot stayed in power, and the Church became a famous anti-government voice.
Recently, Karelin II asked the right to return for Armenians who had driven out of Nagorno-Karabakh, a region of Azerbaijan obtained by 2023.
The allies of the Prime Minister did not enjoy such interventions, as they disobeyed the government’s position in the continuing discussion of peace.
Pashinyan pushes a steep peace covenant to see both countries quitting each other’s possessions. But the mediudo of Azerbaijani was obtained by the national opposition asking for proof that Armenia was not ready for peace.
The church of Armenia benefited from becoming a hub for opposition. With personal opponents between the leaders of the opposition parties, it dragged those who were not affected by the authorities.
Armenian political analysts suggest that it is a real cause of the sudden attack of the Church leader.
The next general election is scheduled for June 2026, and the anti-church campaign can be a pre-emptive strike against strong conservative opposition.
The Prime Minister Himself struggled his political position: “We returned the state of the people. Now we need to restore the Church to the people.”
If a strong benefactor tells the support of the Church this week, the government is easily transferred against him.
Russian-Armenian Sampvel Karapeetan threatened to “intervene in the campaign against the Church in our own way” if opposition failed to protect it.
Hours later, his home was invaded and Wednesday he was charged with “making public calls to defeat the government”. He denies the complaint.
The conflict between political and spiritual Armenian leader is a more sensitive matter to the national boundaries, because the Church and Ukraine to Western Europe, the Middle East and America.
While the rumors about the said secret family in Karekin long surrounded tabloids, for many years of extreme accusations made by diaspora vines.
They say Church leaders move monthly payments and micro-managed idols used to exploit the autonomy of surgery.
In 2013, Armenian patriarchs in Jerusalem accused Karekin II without spiritual qualities and only care of its material benefit. The Church says that allegations lie.
Until recently, the nikol shower remains a lot on the fray. “This is what I believe that the government has no place in the internal issues of the Church,” he said soon after taking office in 2018. The principal minister may have changed his mind.
Whatever the result of this row, it is likely to deepen the polarization of a society that is broken, not only by residents of Russia and the people of Armenia and the tensions between Armenia-Karabakh’s residents.
