“People seem very eager to cast their vote” after the hectic run-up to the election

Ivory Coast went to the polls on Saturday to elect a new leader, as longtime President Alassane Ouattara seeks a fourth term after key candidates were barred from running. Reporting from the densely populated neighborhood of Treichville, FRANCE 24 journalist Justice Baidoo said “people seem very eager to vote”, with some arriving as early as 6am. Ahead of the election, around 700 people were arrested during several protests across the country, Baidoo said.
