Lee Roberts met me at the University Club of San Francisco in the morning, hours before the football team was about to lose to the University of Sleep, because of the small Bill Belicick experiment that had been completed according to the script.

That’s a reasonable point. A modern University Chancellor is part CEO, part diplomat, part academic funder, part academic leader, part sports executive. Of course, no one comes with all the necessary skills. “I think there’s almost no one before going into a job like that, there’s going to be a learning curve,” Roberts said.
What I like about Robert is that he doesn’t seem to have anything he doesn’t want. Federal funding cuts are within the normal range. Belichick’s hire is a wait-and-see situation. As for some of the faculty’s resistance to AI, that’s a puzzle to be solved.
