OpenAI is reportedly asking contractors to upload actual work from past projects

OpenAI and training data company Handshake AI are asking third-party contractors to upload actual work they’ve done on past and current projects, according to reports in Wired.

This appears to be part of a larger strategy in which AI companies hire contractors to generate high-quality training data in the hope that the models can automate more white-collar work.

In OpenAI’s case, the company’s presentation reportedly asked contractors to describe tasks they’ve done on other projects and to upload examples of “real, on-the-job work” they’ve done.correct done.” Examples can include “concrete output (not file summaries, but actual files), e.g. Word doc, PDF, Powerpoint, Excel, image, repo.”

The company reportedly instructed contractors to remove proprietary and personally identifiable information before uploading, and pointed to ChatGPT’s “Superstar Scrubbing” tool to do so.

However, intellectual property attorney Evan Brown told Wired that AI labs that take this approach are “putting themselves at great risk” with an approach that requires “a lot of trust in contractors to decide what’s not confidential.”

An OpenAI spokesperson declined to comment.
