According to a 2003 report resurfaced from the New York TimesNelson, 83, was included in a group looking to buy the outlet. The group also included the late Epstein, Weinstein, 73, CEO of Deutsch Inc Donnie German i The News Newspaper i US News and World Report owner Mortimer Zuckerman.
The group, which was led by Zuckerman, made a $45 million bid for the magazine timebut they were eventually outbid by $10 million from the investment banker Bruce Wasserstein.
“We made it clear that we were willing to put more money on the table,” Zuckerman said in a 2003 statement to The Times. “But after a handshake, they weren’t willing to take any other offers.”

In the years following their attempt to buy the magazine, Epstein and Weinstein became disgraced public figures. Epstein pleaded guilty in 2008 to charges of child prostitution and solicitation of a prostitute. As part of a plea deal, he served 13 months behind bars.
More than a decade later, Epstein faced legal trouble for the second time. In July 2019, the convicted sex offender was arrested on federal child sex trafficking charges in Florida and New York. The following month, Epstein was found dead in his cell. He was 66 years old.
Weinstein, meanwhile, was accused of sexually harassing, assaulting and raping more than a dozen women in 2017. The allegations, which the disgraced film producer has denied, sparked the MeToo movement.

Weinstein remained in prison because of his California conviction, which was not affected.
