Usually, the best movies on Netflix movie lists are action-oriented in some way. But one of the streamer’s latest additions, dogis anything but an action movie.
Instead, this 2022 drama with a modest budget starred Channing Tatum is now a streaming hit on Netflix three years after its theatrical release.

It is a passion project for the directors
Not only does Tatum star in this film, but he also directed it with his regular producing partner, Reid Caroline, of a story of Caroline i Brett Rodriguez. This film marked the end of a five-year hiatus between live-action films for Tatum, but this project brought him back to the screen. He plays Jackson Briggs, a combat veteran who is escorting a former military dog, Lulu, across the country for the funeral of his friend and former handler.
During an interview with Yahoo newsTatum noted that the inspiration for this story was a road trip he took with his terminal dog, also named Lulu. In the film, Briggs only accepts this assignment because he hopes it means the Army will redeploy him despite his lingering brain trauma. However, Lulu is prone to violence after serving in the war. She is broken, and so is Briggs. The only difference between them is that she can be sacrificed for her condition, while he must continue to live.
“Dog” is a love story about man’s best friend
This movie is billed as a comedy/drama, but it’s more of the latter than the former. The laughs in the film come from Tatum’s interactions with the dog and Briggs’ attempt to pass himself off as a blind veteran to earn a mandatory stay at a luxury hotel. Most of the time, Briggs comes out just as emotionally wounded as Lulu. This is where Tatum is most compelling as an actor.
In its own way, this film is a love story between a dysfunctional dog and his equally flawed human companion. Briggs and Lulu don’t immediately take to each other, but the audience will see the levels of trust they build between them. Theirs is a bond that needs no words to seal it, though Tatum speaks enough for both of them. It makes the audience believe that Briggs has come to love Lulu deeply, and she is what makes him human.
The animal performers are very convincing
Animal actors don’t always get their due, but they also act on screen even though they don’t understand the reasoning behind it. In this film, Lulu was played by three dog performers, Britta, Zuza i woolall of them from identical Belgian Malinois breeds.
Since the dogs were identical, it’s hard to tell which one played which scene. But when Lulu needed to appear fierce, scared, or emotionally comforting, the canine in question always conveyed exactly what it was supposed to do at that moment in the film. Not all human actors can hit their marks like this. These dogs were well trained and their collective performances in the film helped make it a satisfying and emotional story.
