Nathan Aspinall’s entry on The Killers’ Mr Brightside is ingrained in darts culture, but the tradition may be facing a change.
As of 2019, fans have become accustomed to associating the song with the current PDC world number 20, with audiences often serenading him as he takes to the stage.
But on ski sports I love the darts podcast Aspinall revealed he considered changing it after trying out a new song on a European tour, but joked it would have consequences for his career.
“Eminem is my idol and I absolutely love his music, but I can’t change it,” Aspinal said.
“I was working out in the ballroom and Lose Yourself came on and the beat at the beginning, I thought, ‘that might be good.’
“So we edited it and I think it sounds amazing to be fair, but it hasn’t been on Sky yet. I don’t know if they’ve approved it or not, but it sounded great at the weekend and on the Euro tour it was great.
“So that remains, but so does Mr. Brightside.
“I can’t change Mr. Brightside because I won’t be invited to anything, no one invites me to exhibitions (without it)!”
However, one change Aspinall is sure will remain is his interest in fitness, often running 5km and even building a “mini gym” in his home.
Being physically active has allowed Aspinall to keep a clear mind, especially when traveling on tour, as he detailed how easy it is to slip into unhealthy habits.
“Running was a big thing for me. It’s so stressful and there’s a lot of pressure on you when you do this job,” he said.
“If things don’t go my way, the pressure builds even more. I think for me, running again keeps my mind clear, so if things don’t go my way, you just forget about it and move on.”
“I also talk to a lot of sports psychologists, I have people I do hypnotherapy with and I think a combination of many factors has made me the player I am today.”
“As darts players, because we’re always on the road, you can just get into a rut where you’ll be tipping the hotel late at night and it’s so easy to just lie in bed all day – like most of them do.”
“There are a lot of them who just lay around, get a delivery, go down to the hotel, pick it up, go back to bed and eat.
He explained that at the beginning of the year, he started experiencing pain in his shoulder and elbow again, which prompted him to do some light strength work.
