Officers in many US government departments offer conflicting guidance of personnel how to respond to a Saturday email they asked their achievements from last week.
The guidance marks the disagreement of the public between Trump’s appointments in charge of thousands of bureaucrats and musk in the outer government of the AGHENTIVE government department
Some leaders of agencies encourage staff to obey while others are asked for employees waiting for further guidance on how appropriate response.
President Donald Trump has never commented on the email.
The message sent to millions of federal employees on Saturday night came on his social platform x that government employees “receive a government stick to understand what they have done last week”.
In a copy of the email captured by the BBC, employees were asked to respond to explaining their achievements from last week to five bullet points at night. The personnel management office (OPM), the Human Government Resources Agency, confirmed that the email is true.
The message does not mention if the decrease in compliance can affect the status of employment, despite the expression of social media “failure to respond to be a resignation”.
The newly confirmed director of the FBI Kash Patel tells his staff in a separate email later on Saturday they need “stop any answers”.
“FBI staff can receive an email from OPM requesting information,” Patel’s letter to a message obtained by CBS News. “The FBI, by the Director’s Office, is in charge of all our processes to review, and will carry out reviews in accordance with FBI methods.”
The state department sent a similar message to its employees, saying that leadership responds for the agency.
“No employee is obligated to report their activities other than their department chain,” an email from Tibor Magy, acting on the undersecretary for management, said.
In a sign that OPM email can be a surprise to many agencies, a senior Department of Justice number distributes employees to the whole government. ”
The message increases “at this point, we do not have reason to believe that this message is spam or harm”.
After Saturday night, a follow-up email was sent explaining that the OPM message was “legitimate” and that “employees should be willing to follow instructions as requested” .
Justice’s justice message also comes with a warning of staff: “Do not include any sensitive, confidential, or classified information in your answer please contact your supervisor.
“If we receive additional guidance or information, I will update all employees, if necessary.”
Other departments, including the Department of Defense, the National Security Agency, the Internal Revenue Service and National Oceanic and Atmospheric administration and employees waiting for further guidance.
OPM does not immediately answer the BBC question if some staff can be free.
The American federation of government employees, the largest union representing federal employees, criticizing the message “violent and disrespectful” and oath to challenge any “unlawful federal employees.
It is unclear how the message affects any three million federal workers who may not have access to their emails this weekend.
Other government employees, such as those in the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, put to leave last month.
Email comes hours after Trump’s job settlement on social media, add: “I want to see him more aggressive.”
Most Congress members in the Republican defend musk and his wider effort.
