When I was just over one year old, Microsoft Artificial Intelligence is one of the tech giant’s latest experiments. The research lab oversees the company’s consumer artificial intelligence products, which include Microsoft Copilot – its Gen AI chatbot, runs on OpenAI’s large language model.
However, Liz Danzico, vice president of AI design at Microsoft, pointed out that her design and research team (about 200 employees in the entire lab) are not all AI natives.
“We have a goal for our organization — by the end of this fiscal year, everyone in the studio will be an AI native,” Danzico said at Fortune’s Brainstorm design conference in Macau on Tuesday.
Danzico said she helped her team create an in-house AI course and received a “very positive response.” Artificial intelligence has been integrated into Microsoft AI’s products and internal communications, and its employees “feel more comfortable and energized by the possibilities of AI.”
Danzico said they also became less fearful and anxious about it after “trying multiple (artificial intelligence) tools.”
As Microsoft’s artificial intelligence business continues to expand under CEO Mustafa Suleyman, Danzico also stressed the importance of creating a workplace where employees can deal with uncertainty and embrace creativity.
“For different ideas to come to fruition, people have to feel safe expressing them, so (it’s key) to ensure that psychological safety exists,” she added.
social impact
In addition to pioneering AI on platforms like Bing and Microsoft Edge, a wider range of companies are exploring how to democratize AI in society.
December 2023, Microsoft Sign a partnership Working with the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), the largest union federation in the United States, Microsoft can educate union workers about AI deployment and convene summits to give workers a say in how companies incorporate AI into their work.
“It’s really important that they (workers) have access to this information — ideas about what’s happening and unfolding in the marketplace — so when they come back to the bargaining table, their day-to-day jobs and the way they touch our daily lives, they’re informed,” Danzico said.
Danzico explained that, overall, Microsoft AI’s work is focused on creating artificial intelligence for the greater good of humanity and society. “What unites us all is our commitment to our users, whether they are working in the office, at their desk or in the field.”
