Microsoft is leaving no stone unturned in its efforts to secure more computing capacity to meet customer demand for AI services.
On Monday, the Redmond tech giant signed a $9.7 billion contract with Australia’s Iren to secure AI cloud computing capacity. The agreement will give Microsoft access to compute the infrastructure built with Nvidia’s GP300 GB300, which will be applied during the Iren facility through 2026 in the Iren facility in Minor, Texas, planning 750 megawatts of capacity.
Iron says it bought GPUs and equipment from Dell for about $5.8 billion.
The deal follows Microsoft last month’s launch First production run with GB300 NVL72 NVL72 system for Azurewhich, the company says, is model-optimized, agent AI system and multi-modal AI.
Last month, Microsoft entered into a transaction with NSCALE around 200,000 NVIDIA GB300 GPUs across three data centers in Europe and one in the US
Similar to competitors like Coreweave, Iren started as a bitcoin mining operation, but quickly realized that a better collection of GPUs was better used for AI work. The company has benefited from a shift in focus.
