‘Very unusual request’: Israeli President Isaac Herzog said he will focus only on Israel’s “best interests” when considering Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s request for clemency on corruption charges. Senior adviser at Chatham House, Yossi Mekelberg, claims that this is as much about the integrity of the judiciary, the separation of powers and a deeply damaged nation as it is about the soul of Israeli democracy. “The idea that Netanyahu can actually continue to be prime minister as long as he stops the corruption case is completely unacceptable,” Mr. Meckelberg argued. If Herzog agrees to a pardon, “it is likely to compromise Israel’s liberal democracy and the independence of the judiciary.”
