Two goals from Lewis Reid against his former club helped Mansfield to a shock 4-3 win over Sheffield United in the FA Cup.
Lucas Eakins and Rhys Oates also scored for the League One club, while Gus Hammer, Patrick Bamford and a Nathan Moriah-Welsh own goal provided United’s goals.
Oates threatened the visitors early with several attempts which were saved by Adam Davies. The Blades keeper had no chance, however, as the corner was cleared only to Reid, who brought the ball down and found the net with a brilliant strike to give Mansfield the lead on 13 minutes.
Hammer beat Liam Roberts in the Mansfield goal with an equally impressive strike from the edge of the ‘D’ to equalize in the 20th minute.
Mansfield regained the lead a minute before the break when Reid struck again with another fine strike from a corner which beat Davies with a deflection.
It was 3-1 to Mansfield five minutes after the break when Oates broke down the right, got to the byline and pulled the ball to Ekins, who fired into the net.
The impressive Oats added a fourth goal in the 57th minute, flicking the ball past Ben Mee before heading towards goal and firing confidently past Davies.
Substitute Bamford pulled one back in the 61st minute, tapping in from close range after a corner was headed in.
The deficit was further reduced four minutes later when Moriah-Welsh, trying to clear Andre Brooks’ cross, saw the ball go into his own net off the underside of the crossbar.
The home side had a late penalty appeal dismissed when Bamford went down for a challenge inside the area.
West Brom beat Swansea on penalties
Ollie Bostock kept his cool to slot home the winning penalty in a dramatic shoot-out win at Swansea to end West Brom’s run of 10 consecutive away defeats and see his side through to the fourth round of the FA Cup.
Setting up Jed Wallace early in the second overtime period to give his team a 2-1 lead, he hit the target after three straight misses to make it 6-5 in the shootout after the teams were locked at 2-2 after overtime.
Eom Ji-sung broke the deadlock with a shot into the top corner in the 48th minute before Josh Maia equalized for West Brom from a corner five minutes later.
Swansea substitute Malik Jalkuya hit the post in the first stoppage time before Wallace put the Baggies ahead in the 108th minute, only for Zeidan Inousa to hit back four minutes later to send the game to penalties.
James Morrison was in the visitors’ dugout as speculation continued over who would become Ryan Mason’s long-term successor and become the Hawthorns’ eighth permanent manager from 2020.
Makama hat-trick helps Norwich beat Walsall
Yovon Makama led the way with a hat-trick as Championship strugglers Norwich cruised into the fourth round of the FA Cup with a dominant 5-1 win over Walsall at Carrow Road.
The forward made it 12 goals for the season, while Matej Jurasek and Toni Springet scored their first goals for the club in a one-sided encounter as the Ligue 2 visitors barely lifted a glove against their opponents.
Walsall pulled one back in spectacular fashion in the 67th minute when substitute Courtney Clarke cut in from the left and found the top corner from 30 yards.
Hull beat Blackburn on penalties
Goalkeeper Dillon Phillips was the hero as Hull beat Sky Bet Championship rivals Blackburn 4-3 on penalties to reach the fourth round of the FA Cup.
A poor goalless draw where clear-cut chances were few and far between over 120 minutes took this tie to the spot, with Phillips saving Rovers’ first two efforts from Yuki Ohashi and Moussa Baradji.
Hull captain Levi Coyle was thwarted by Blackburn keeper Balazs Toth, but Kyle Joseph, Ollie McBurney, Charlie Hughes and David Akintola were all on target to take Hull into the next round.
