Patrick Mahomes he knows the Kansas City Chiefs will look very different next season.
While attending a press conference on Thursday, Jan. 15, the star quarterback said he is thinking about what the team’s coaching staff could look like after a disappointing 2025-2026 season, specifically talking about the offensive coordinator status. Matt Nagy.
Nagy is a popular commodity for many teams looking to fill a vacant head coaching position, and has already interviewed with the Arizona Cardinals, Baltimore Ravens, Las Vegas Raiders and Tennessee Titans.
While Mahomes said he doesn’t want to see Nagy leave for another team, he acknowledged that the former NFL Coach of the Year has earned the right to a head coaching job again.
“Obviously there are names out there, but with how many vacancies there are in the head coaching job, you have to let that all play out to see how you build the roster,” Mahomes said. “I know the coach (Andy) Reid — If Nagy is able to get another head coaching job, he’ll have a good plan of who he wants to bring in.”

He won the 2018 NFL Coach of the Year award in his first season with the Bears, following a 12-4 campaign that came with an NFC North championship.
On Thursday, Mahomes continued to say that his priority as a quarterback is to have a coordinator who “loves football” and “wants to give everything he can to win.”
“But for me, I just want someone who loves football, who cares about football, who wants to give everything they can to win, hold people accountable and then bring new ideas every day,” Mahomes said. “That’s something we’ve got to keep doing if you want to keep being great in this league, is you’ve got to keep evolving and getting better and better and that’s something we’re going to try to do here and I want to get back to that winning culture of being accountable to each other and going out and playing great football every day, practice or game.”

Mahomes and the Chiefs finished the season with a 6-11 record, missing the playoffs for the first time since the 2014-2015 season.
Also during the press conference, Mahomes shared a update on his ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) and LCL (lateral collateral ligament) injuries.. He had a successful surgery last month.
“The rehab is going great so far,” Mahomes said. “I’m hitting all the checkpoints the doctor wants you to do. Getting strength and range of motion back. So it’s been going great. So far I’ve done everything here in Kansas City.”
Mahomes continued, “I want to be ready for Week 1. The doctors said I might be. I can’t predict what’s going to happen throughout the process, but that’s my goal. I’m going to try to prepare to be ready to play this Week 1 and I have no restrictions.”
