Lindsey Vonn he underwent a third operation on Wednesday and says he is making “slow” progress recovering from the crash that broke his leg in Sunday’s Olympic race.
The operation was a success, he said post on Instagram. He also shared photos of himself in a hospital bed with a metal frame attached to his leg.
“Success today has a completely different meaning than it did a few days ago,” he posted. “I’m making progress and even if it’s slow, I know I’ll be fine.”
He said he is grateful for the incredible doctors, family and friends who have stood by him and for the “beautiful outpouring of love and support from people all over the world.”
“Also, huge congrats to my teammates and all of the USA athletes who give me something to inspire and cheer for,” he posted.
Vonn fell seconds after deciding to compete in his race despite tearing his left ACL in a previous crash at a World Cup event in the Swiss Alps a week earlier.
The 41-year-old American came out of retirement to compete 2026 Winter Olympics and said he felt confident he could still finish the race with the help of a knee brace.
