Libyan prosecutors have launched a formal investigation Assassination of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, Son of the country’s late leader Muammar Gaddafi.
The public prosecutor’s office said on Wednesday that forensic experts had been sent to Zintan in northwestern Libya, where Gaddafi was shot dead, and that efforts were underway to identify the suspects.

“The subject of the gunshot wound has died,” the office said in a statement, adding that investigators are looking to “talk to witnesses and anyone who may shed light on the incident.”
Gaddafi’s political team said “four masked men” stormed his home and killed him in a “cowardly and treacherous murder”. It said Gaddafi was in direct conflict with the attackers, who had turned off the property’s security cameras in what it described as a “desperate attempt to cover up traces of their heinous crimes”.
Holding no formal government position, Gaddafi was seen as his father’s second-in-command from 2000 until the 2011 uprising that ended Muammar Gaddafi’s 42-year rule and resulted in his assassination by opposition forces.
Saif al-Islam was captured by militias in Zintan in late 2011 as he tried to flee to neighboring Niger after the fall of Tripoli.
After spending six years in prison, he was freed under the amnesty law in 2017 and remains a resident of Zintan.
