Joshua Honored After Friends Killed In Nigeria Tragedy


Anthony Joshua has paid tribute to his best friends Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele after they died in a car accident in Nigeria.

Ghami and Ayodele died when the car they were traveling in collided with a lorry on a highway near Lagos. Joshua and another passenger were also in the car. Joshua received minor injuries and later returned to the UK.


Joshua attended a funeral service at a mosque in London on Sunday. In a post on Instagram, he said it was difficult to deal with the loss and expressed sympathy for the families of the victims. He described Ghami and Ayodele as close companions and said their parents are facing the greatest burden.

Ghami worked as Joshua’s full-time sports and fitness coach and was part of his team for over a decade. Ayodele is a personal mentor and longtime friend. Hours before the incident, Joshua posted a video of himself playing table tennis with Ayodele.

On Sunday, Joshua shared photos of himself sitting with family members of the victims, including their mothers. He also posted a picture holding a picture of Ghami.

The driver, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46 years old, appeared before the Sagamu Magistrate’s Court on Friday. Police said he was charged with vehicular manslaughter. He has been released on five million naira bail and the case has been adjourned to January 20.

Joshua is from his family in Sagamu and was visiting his family to celebrate the new year at the time of the accident.
