Jelly roll is one of three new judges joining the new Netflix restart of Search for starswhich opens at the end of this month.
The 41-year-old country superstar will join them Sarah Michelle Gellar i chrissy teigen at the judges’ table, while Anthony Anderson will serve as host. The series premieres on Tuesday, January 20 and will stream live on Netflix on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for the next five weeks.
“The new and reimagined series builds on the rich legacy of Search for starswhich helped launch the careers of global icons like Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, Dave Chappelle, Adam Sandler and many more,” Netflix said in a press release on Tuesday, Jan. 6. “Off the air for 20 years, the show returns as a nostalgic yet fresh entry into the talent competition space, ready to captivate both longtime fans and a new generation.”
The show will feature contestants showcasing their talents in the fields of music, dance, variety, comedy and magic, with the ‘juniors’ competing in their own category. Viewers watching at home will be able to vote for their favorite contestants using the remote control or by touching the screen if watching through the Netflix mobile app.
“Search for stars it’s back! The talent is bigger, the stakes are higher, and the format is more interactive than ever,” the press release continued. “With an arched competition structure and weekly eliminations with real-time global voting, the series builds spectacular momentum, making every live episode an unmissable event.”
star sharkh originally aired between 1983 and 1995 and was presented by the late Ed McMahon. A new version, hosted by Arsenio Roomit later aired on CBS from 2003 to 2004.
As the press release notes, Beyoncé, 44, is one of the most famous artists to compete Search for stars. He appeared with Destiny’s Child, then called Girls Tyme, in 1993, but the group lost out to a band called the Skeleton Crew.
Beyoncé included an audio clip from the episode on the song “***Flawless” from her 2013 self-titled album. The accompanying music video includes footage from the episode too, and the video ends with the clip of Skeleton Crew crowning themselves winners over Beyoncé and her bandmates.
“When I was in the studio, I was piecing the songs together and I thought about that performance, which was a really defining moment in my life as a kid,” Beyoncé said in a 2013 video accompanying the album. “In my mind, we would still be performing Search for starswe’d win, we’d get a record deal, and that was my dream at the time.”
He added: “There’s no way in the world I would have imagined losing as a possibility. I was only 9 years old. At that time, you don’t realize you can work really hard and give everything you’ve got and lose. It was the best message for me.”
Skeleton Crew members, meanwhile, remain confused as to why they were competing against Beyoncé in the first place.
“This Search for stars pitted five grown men against six 12-year-old girls, remains puzzling to this day. Guillem Pilipchuk joked a people in 2013.
Search for stars premieres on Netflix on Tuesday, January 20 at 9:00 PM ET.
