vice president JD Vance received a not-so-pleasant greeting at the 2026 Olympics.
JD, 41, and his wife, Usha Vanceattended the opening ceremony at the Stadio Olimpico Milano San Siro in Milan on Friday, February 6. During the broadcast, the couple raised American flags while cheering on Team USA during the Parade of Nations.
The vice president and second lady were also shown on the stadium’s jumbotron, greeted by loud cheers from the crowd, according to the NBC broadcast.
“There’s Vice President JD Vance and his wife Usha … there were a lot of boos for him,” an NBC announcer said during the broadcast. “Whistles, jeers and some applause.”

USA Today also reported Friday that Vance was being “loudly booed” by the crowd.
Ahead of the ceremony, International Olympic Committee President Kirsty Coventry shared at a press conference on Wednesday, February 4, that she hoped the crowd would be respectful of the various attendees.
“I hope that the opening ceremony will be seen by everyone as an opportunity to be respectful of each other,” he said. “Nobody’s asking what country they’re from or what religion they’re from. They’re all coming out. It was a real opportunity to put into perspective what we could all be. And so, for me, I hope the opening ceremony does that and is a reminder to everyone of what we could be.”
When JD arrived in Milan on Thursday, February 5, he expressed his excitement for the games, telling reporters that the Olympics “are one of the few things that bring the whole country together.”
“The whole country (Democrat, Republican, independent) we’re rooting for you and cheering you on,” Vance said, per the Associated Press.

JD and Usha’s exit comes a month later the couplewho married in 2014, announced they were expecting baby No. 4. (The couple are parents to sons Ewan, 8, and Vivek, 6, as well as daughter Mirabel, 4).
“We are very excited to share the news that Usha is pregnant with our fourth child, a boy,” read a joint statement shared via Usha’s Instagram at the time. “Usha and the baby are doing well, and we are all looking forward to welcoming him at the end of July.”
The statement continued: “During this exciting and hectic time, we are especially grateful for the military doctors who provide excellent care for our family and the staff members who do so much to ensure that we can serve the country while enjoying a wonderful life with our children.”
Before announcing her pregnancy, rumors swirled that JD and Usha, 40, were headed for a split after the second lady was spotted not wearing her wedding ring. JD close the speculation in December 2025.
“With anything in life, you take the good with the bad,” he said in an interview with NBC News. “You accept that there are some sacrifices and there are some really good things too. But our marriage is as strong as it’s ever been, and I think Usha has stuck with it, and it’s been great to see her develop and evolve in this new role.”
