Japanese Prime Minister Sane Takaichi has dissolved parliament ahead of snap elections on February 8.
The speaker of Japan’s parliament read a letter on Friday, officially dissolving the lower house as lawmakers chanted the traditional rallying cry of “banzai”.
Takaichi, the country’s first female prime minister, announced her intentions to run for office on Monday and hopes to capitalize on her personal popularity to help the ruling party regain ground after a major loss of public support in recent years.
