strange things they killed off a crucial main character at the end of the series, but are they still alive?
During the series finale on Wednesday, December 31, Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) survived multiple near-death experiences while fighting to destroy Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower). Hopper (David Harbour) helped keep her alive while Kali (Linnea Berthelsen) was shot.
Eleven was able to confront and kill Vecna once and for all, but she did not return to Hawkins. Instead, Eleven stayed in the Upside Down to make sure her friends survived and weren’t constantly in danger because of her existence.
The time jump at the end of the episode showed that Eleven was thought to be dead. Mike (Finn Wolfhard), however, suggested another theory when he pointed out that Eleven’s powers were suppressed by the military, so the image of her death could have been a vision created by Kali in her final moments.
Mike held out hope that Eleven he was able to live his life somewhere away from Hawkins, which the audience saw briefly although it was up to the viewer which ending they chose for the story.
“What we wanted to do was face the reality of what his situation was after all of this and how he could live a normal life,” said the creator. Matt Duffer he said Tumdu in a postmortem interview. “These are the questions we’ve been asking ourselves this season that Hopper doesn’t want to think about or talk about. Obviously, Mike’s talked about it a lot, but it’s kind of this fantasy version that would never work.”

Matt noted that “there are two paths” Eleven could take. “There is one that is darker, more pessimistic or another that is optimistic and hopeful,” he added. “Mike is the optimist of the group and has chosen to believe in this story.”
Co-creator Ross Dufferfor his part, he pointed out that this it always had to be the end at the show
“There was never a version of the story where Eleven hung out with the gang at the end. For us and our writers, we didn’t want to take her powers away,” he explained. “She represents magic in so many ways and the magic of childhood. In order for our characters to move forward and for the story of Hawkins and the upside down to come to an end, Eleven had to go.”
He continued, “We thought it would be nice for our characters to continue to believe in this happier ending even if we didn’t give them a clear answer as to whether that’s true or not. For them to believe in that, we just thought it was a better way to end the story and a better way to represent the closure of that journey and their journey from children to adults.”
The showrunners he urged viewers to choose his own ending for Eleven.
“And the reality is, if Eleven is out there, the most they could hope for is to believe it’s true because they can’t be in contact with her,” Matt concluded. “Everything falls apart if that’s the case. So if that’s the narrative, that’s really the best way to keep it alive. And it’s about Mike and everybody finding a way to get over what’s happened.”
