In order to qualify for special treatment, inmates must have a special management form (SH-J-181) completed and submitted to the watch commander for approval and signature, according to the handbook. If the application is approved, the form will be sent to the IRC Classification Unit for possible reclassification. While the decision is being made, the inmate will be isolated from others until the IRC completes its review and a disposition is reached.

Nick was originally put on suicide watch, though he is no longer on duty and the prison took out the suicide prevention vest before I had to wear it at all times.

The prison has established procedures for suicidal or mental observation of prisoners with special treatment. According to the manual, adjunct staff who see an inmate exhibiting unusual behavior that could cause him or her to injure themselves should report the behavior on a psychiatric referral form.

If a mental health professional determines that an inmate with a Special Handling Classification needs mental health care, staff will ensure that the health and safety of the inmate is the primary concern.
