It’s a fascinating true crime narrative
The story in two parts of In the fire: the lost daughter surrounds Cathy Terkanian, who discovers that, after giving birth as a teenager to a baby she finally gave up for adoption three decades ago, her son has been missing for 21 years. While this premise may sound like the plot of a compelling mystery novel, this is the real theme of this documentary. Cathy’s quest to find her biological daughter, Aundria Bowmanit’s a passionate and dogged pursuit fueled by what can only be described as a maternal instinct that can’t just evaporate through distance and time.
Although she never wanted to give up on her daughter, Cathy’s mother convinced her, and so Cathy lived in hope that they would connect years later. This never happened and instead Cathy received a letter from the adoption agency in 2010 informing her that Aundria had gone missing in 1989 when she was fourteen. From that letter, Cathy committed herself to her investigation, recruiting her husband, online sleuths, and Aundria’s real-life friends to search for answers. What he finds is a disturbing story about the family that adopted Aundria.
‘Into the Fire’ avoids exploiting its tragic source material
Instead of focusing primarily on the gruesome details of the crime, In the fire: the lost daughter instead, it strives to emphasize a mother’s search for her missing daughter, and thus focuses the narrative on the victims of the crime rather than the crime itself. The documentary shows Cathy’s determination in her research, her refusal to be beaten or take no for an answer, and how, at times, intuition is an almost supernatural gift. It is a fascinating exploration of family, sacrifice and the strength of the parental bond.
Still, the film manages to avoid becoming an overly reverent portrayal of maternal instinct because the details of the crime are so gruesome that they require restraint and a steady hand. And Cathy’s climactic instinct that she attributes to their eternal mother-daughter bond seems like the unfortunate knowledge that comes with living in a world where monstrous men feel entitled to do whatever they want. By drawing on Cathy and Aundria’s story and highlighting how they failed, In the Fire it becomes more than just pulp voyeurism.
It emphasizes systemic failures towards women’s safety

netflixIf there is one lasting takeaway in the fire is that stories like Aundria’s have happened too many times. Men have been able to abuse, mistreat and even kill women, while women’s cries for help are ignored. In the Fire it emphasizes a system that does not value women’s lives. Aundria received much of the better life that Cathy had been told she would receive through adoption. Instead, she was abused and mistreated by her adoptive father, Dennis Bowman, and when she confided in her school, her church, and the police, what happened? nothing
Aundria probably could have been saved if only someone in authority had given her the decency to listen to her and believe her story. Instead, he was fired and met his tragic fate because of it. Of course, In the Fire is not the only true-crime documentary to comment on how women’s safety is not taken seriously, and when considered together, a devastating and infuriating pattern emerges in which the system is rigged in favor of white men and against everyone else.
