One War After Another, about a former revolutionary whose daughter is kidnapped, leads the pack this year after becoming one of the most critically acclaimed films of 2025.

A new adaptation of Frankenstein provides a more emotional take on Mary Shelley’s novel about a mad scientist and the creature he creates, while blockbuster Evil: For Good concludes the origin story of Elphaba, the wicked witch of the west.

Kidnapping drama It was just an accident, one of the best films of this year’s awards season and the winner of the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival, follows a man who seeks revenge on the former officer who once tortured him in prison.

Rose Byrne is up for best musical comedy actress, while Jessie Buckley will win best drama actress

Box office titans Timothée Chalamet (Marty Supreme) and Leonardo DiCaprio (One Battle After Another) will compete in a heated race for the best musical or comedy artist. Ethan Hawke (Blue Moon) is a possible dark horse.

For best actor in a drama, Michael B. Jordan (Sinners) has a solid chance, although the more international focus the Globes have taken in recent years suggests we can’t count out the Cannes winner. Wagner Moura (The Secret Agent).

While the best musical or comedy field of the actress is led by seasoned pros like Rose Byrne (If I Had Legs I’d Kick You) and Kate Hudson (Song Sung Blue), there is strong competition from newcomers Infiniti Chase (One War After Another).

The best drama actress is very easy to predict – others Jessie Buckley (Hamnet) is considered superior to his strongest competitors viz Renate Reinve (Sentimental Value).

Among the supporting actors and actress contenders Amy Madigan (Weapons), Jacob Elord (Frankenstein), Benicio Del Toro, Sean Penn and Teyana Taylor (all One War After One).

Who hosts the Golden Globes?

US comic Nikki Glaser returns to hosting duties after a barnstorming performance at least a year away from the ceremony.

He delivered an opening monologue that rivaled the Globe’s greats — Ricky Gervais, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler — grilling the A-list celebrities in the room.

Hosting the Golden Globes, Glaser later said, was “without a doubt the most fun I’ve had in my career”.

But, Glaser told the BBC’s Regan Morris earlier this week, he was always in awe of all the “star power” in the room, adding: “I wipe my eyes when I’m on stage, I do that at night.”

Why is Adolescence still nominated?

Adolescence continues to win awards, including at the Critics’ Choice Awards last week

It’s been almost a year since most people watched the Netflix hit about a teenage boy accused of stabbing his classmate, and the series has already won Emmys, Critics’ Choice and National Television Awards.

But since many other awards events come more or less during the calendar year, Adolescence is only recognized at events like the Golden Globes.

Expect to see more of Owen Cooper, Stephen Graham and Erin Doherty at other events to come – such as the Actor Awards (formerly SAG) in March, and the Bafta TV Awards, which don’t take place until May.

What awards have been given?

Dame Helen Mirren and Sarah Jessica Parker have received their lifetime achievement prizes

The two special prizes that recognize lifetime achievement are usually given out in the evening, but this year they were awarded last week at the inaugural ceremony on Globes Eve.

Sex and the City star Sarah Jessica Parker received the Carol Burnett award, for outstanding contribution to television, while Dama Helen Mirren received the film’s equivalent, the Cecil B DeMille award.

During his acceptance speech, Dame Helen said the prize “was described to me as a career recognition”.

“But,” he continued, “I prefer to think of it as a life lived, a life saved, a life enjoyed, a life sweated, and a life continued, hopefully.”

In his speech, Parker thanked the friends, colleagues and family who supported him in a decade long showbiz career, telling them: “You have been an integral part of an inconceivable life, it is a bounty, thank you.”

Why are the Golden Globes important?

Weapons star Amy Madigan is hoping to repeat her supporting actress win at last week’s Critics’ Choice Awards.

An actor or film that wins the Golden Globes doesn’t automatically win the Oscars, but it helps strengthen the chances of a nomination.

As one of the earliest ceremonies of the awards season, the Globes can provide a huge boost in momentum, as a win or well-received acceptance speech can encourage more Academy voters to check out a particular film.

Stars like Sebastian Stan, Demi Moore and Fernando Torres all went on to pick up Oscar nominations after their Globe wins in January (although Stan’s was for a different film).

And movies like flowing and I’m still there got their awards campaign off to a strong start thanks to early wins at the Golden Globes, and both went on to win Oscars in the animated and international categories respectively.

Dubbed the “drunk uncle” of awards season, the Globes are a less formal event than the Oscars.

You can expect the celebrities to be in a relaxed mood and ready to have fun with their speeches – as long as they can survive being grilled by Nikki Glaser first.
