Grey’s Anatomy is stopping production on season 22.
The hit medical drama will not be filmed on Friday, January 30, as originally planned, it said Deadline. The ABC series is no longer in production due to a call for a national shutdown by University of Minnesota student groups amid ongoing anti-ICE protests.
The outlet reported that the decision to temporarily suspend filming was made after production learned that some of the show’s crew members were not planning to show up. Filming is expected to resume on Saturday, January 31, and so far there is no word on other Hollywood productions affected.
Grey’s Anatomy it was already meant to be off the air for three weeks. It will return to its regular time slot on February 26 after being brought forward, likely due to the upcoming Winter Olympics. For now, repeat episodes of 9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Nashville will play in Grey’s Anatomy’s regular timeslot. The episode of Thursday, January 29 ended with Jo (Camilla Luddington) finally being able to return home with their newborns and a return of Kate Walsh.
The show then it will be back with a new episode with several guest stars. Deadline previously revealed this Yellowstone‘s Jen Landon He will repeat in four episodes as Dr. Tonight Wright, a new plastic surgery attending. His character has been described as “possessing (has) a magnetic taste for life” and as “a charming, disorganized mess who says yes more than no”. The role could extend beyond the show’s current season.

There will also be new characters played by Sara Paxton i Price Connor. They appear in episodes 11 and 12 of the season as a relative of a patient and a patient, respectively.
Grey’s Anatomy this season alone has faced many cast changes. After the shocking death of Monica (Natalie Morales), Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) chose to take a sabbatical. It was later reported that Scorsone’s break will last until the end of this year as a result of a cost-saving measure.
The show is already reducing minimum guarantees for its veteran cast members to 14 of the show’s 18 episodes per season. While some of Grey’s Anatomy’s regular stars will be gone for four episodes, Scorsone’s absence was doubled.
Showrunner And Marines previously hinted at it not all characters would be safe this season.
“But even in the last two seasons with what you’ve seen this year, we’ve had to whittle down the cast a little bit (due to industry-wide budget cuts) and everyone has very passionate feelings about their favorite characters,” Marinis told The Hollywood Reporter in May 2025. “But if we can upset the writers, we know we will if somebody’s not happy with the story. It’s supposed to upset and sadden people, so I’m sure there will be some arguments, but I was persuaded before I changed my mind.
Grey’s Anatomy airs on ABC on Thursdays at 10pm ET before rebroadcasting the next day on Hulu.
