England’s Charlie Hull and playing partner Michael Brennan are one shot ahead of the lead in the final round of the mixed teams Grant Thornton Invitational.
American Lauren Coughlin holed a bunker shot for eagle on the par-5 17th hole as she and Andrew Novak combined for a solid 4-under 68 in the foursomes to build a one-shot lead after two rounds.
They were at 19-under and held a one-stroke lead over Hull and Brennan, who were poised to share the lead until a triple bogey on the final hole when Hull birdied from under three feet.
“We played pretty steady,” Hull said afterward.
“It’s a shame I missed that short putt on the last one, but obviously it’s a tougher format, foursomes. We played decently today.”
“It’s easy (playing with Brennan). “I really, really enjoy his game. I like the way he is and his acting is great. Like I’m definitely going to sit back and watch the PGA Tour now to see how he progresses.
“He has every chance, I think he will win more.”
Hull and Brennan were set for part of the lead until the late bogey
Lexi Thompson and Wyndham Clark are two shots off the lead after finishing with eight-over par 72s.
The final round is a modified four ball. Each player tees off, then swap golf balls and stick with that ball the rest of the way, counting the low score.
That should lead to a lower score, although the Canadian duo of Brooke Henderson and Corey Connors did their part in the harder fours. They managed seven birdies and briefly shared the lead until the bogey on the 18th.
That left them three shots behind, along with Nellie Cord and Danny McCarthy (70) and Jennifer Kupcho and Chris Gotterup (70).
The Kupcho-Gotterup and Coughlin-Novak teams made a double bogey on the par-5 14th. Coughlin helped her recover when she left the right bunker on the 17th.
What is the Grant Thornton Invitational?
The 54-hole event is a mixed team event in which 16 LPGA Tour and 16 PGA Tour professionals compete together in a unique jointly sanctioned tournament.
The three-day tournament offers three different team play formats and allows a field of 32 players to compete for equal prize money and visibility.
This is the second consecutive year the tournament has been on the schedule, and it launched in 2023 as the first joint event between the LPGA Tour and the PGA Tour since the 1999 JCPenney Classic.
