New year, new Gmail. Google Announce On Thursday, the company further integrated Gemini 3 into its email service and its more than 3 billion users.
The expanded features, which include AI summarization and writing tools, are Google’s response to users wanting a more personalized AI experience.
“We recently surveyed our users and found that 85% of users find AI in Gmail most helpful when leveraging their content to generate tailored responses,” said Gmail Head of Product and Vice President of Product. Blake Barnestold reporters on a conference call Wednesday. “They don’t need a universal assistant.” A December poll by Google Workspace and Harris Poll found that 92% of knowledge workers ages 22-39 want personalization capabilities in AI.
As part of the rollout, an AI overview tool similar to the one on Google Search will summarize email threads. Paid users will be able to query their inbox and receive an AI overview.
Biggest update
The biggest update is how Gemini will assist users in composing and replying to messages. The “Write for Me” tool, formerly available as a paid service on Gmail, can draft emails based on signal prompts. According to the company’s internal data, 70% of enterprise users who use “Write for Me” in Google Docs or Gmail have adopted Gemini’s suggestions.
“AI securely analyzes your past emails. It learns your writing style, typical greetings, closings, and what’s going on in your life to generate suggested responses that are truly tailored to you,” said Barnes. Next month, the Help Me Write tool will be updated to include information from users’ other Google apps.
The existing Smart Reply feature, now called Suggested Replies, can write responses that better match the user’s tone and style. While both features are free for everyone, the AI proofreading tool that addresses word choice, brevity, and active voice is only available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.
The update will also pilot an AI-powered inbox tab with “trusted testers” to introduce users to their emails and create to-do lists that will remind users of tasks like paying bills or making dental appointments.
These features are only available in English and US versions. Google plans to expand to other languages and countries in the coming months.
